World migrations: "The good, the bad and the ugly" [Part 1]

"He, who benefits from a crime is the one most likely to have committed it." Have you ever heard that statement...? Well, more often than not, basing your analysis on it can lead you to interesting conclusions.

THE GOOD

The quest for citizenship

In a number of countries, the influx of migrants has become a recurring topic. In the latest news, whether it is in the US, Europe or even in the little island of Mayotte (A French overseas island), illegal immigration and its bad consequences is a nagging issue. The truth of the matter is yes, a few migrants take advantage of the daunting journey their parents or themselves have endured. They manage to improve their quality of life and end up becoming good citizens. With that being said, should we only focuse on that or should we rather focuse on the big picture :
  • What is the outcome for the country of origin...?
  • What is the outcome for the welcoming country...?

 THE BAD

Building from burning ashes

A number of migrants if not the majority end up having the feeling that they have chased a mirage. Imagine having to face a new culture, quite often a new language. In some cases, especially if the migrant comes from a village on the countryside, the adjustment is even more difficult to implement. Then, for some, the temptation to use illegal means to make ends meet comes into play. However, it is hard to understand and frustrating for the locals to see that. Someone who travelled looking for a better life is not only destroying his life but also making enemies of his hosts. Hosts that did not choose to welcome them, they have been forced to live with them. If this vicious circle continue and without any decisive action from the local authorities, you have there a perfect recipe for civil unrest. The worst case scenario might even be an all out civil war. In some cases, it seems legitimate to ask ourselves :
  • Why is it the local authorities do almost nothing about it...?
  • Who could possibly benefit from such a dire situation...?

AND THE UGLY

United in haste

It might be a very little circle but some people do have an interest in maintaining the vicious circle described here above. Amongst them, you can count some entrepreneurs, investors, politicians or even locals who have something to get out of the migrants coming in. Keep in mind that those different people do have one THING in common : "Aiming for the quickest gain." They just don't want to give themwelves time to consider any bad repercussion. One of them could be an all out civil war taking place down the road.
